Big home win for Muir

A wind-blown affair at the College on the Hill saw Muir start slow and finish strong by running in nine tries to convincingly beat Westering 57-13. Muir just had their noise ahead 19-6 at the break.

Silly mistakes and trying to complicate the game saw Muir struggle to get into their stride and put phases together. Westering used this to their advantage and kicked their way onto the scoreboard to put the first points on the board.

The College settled and left wing Xolela Daniels crossed to take the lead. Right wing Sithembiso Metshe worked hard to avoid defenders and cross for Muir’s second try of the day. Flyhalf Abongile Sonjica kicked the conversion to extend the lead. Westering hammered away when they had possession and were rewarded with a penalty. Centre Lunathi Nxele crossed for Muir’s third when he wrongfooted the defence, Sonjica converted.

Muir had the wind at their back in the second half; not allowing for this saw numerous knock-on’s and Westering gained a lot of possession.

A lapse in concentration after a substitution saw Westering run in a converted try.

Muir settled, upped the tempo and played with meaning in the last 25 minutes to run in six unanswered tries.

Try-scorers were fullback Luphelo Miggels, lock Lungile Sonwabo, flank Mziwamadoda Goba, reserve prop Mmeli Nkebe (2), and reserve fullback Ruben de Vos. Sonjica and De Vos each kicked two conversions.

Muir’s loose trio of Mziwamadoda Goba, Sipelele Latola and Mihlali Mosi stood out and played well in both tight and loose phases. Flyhalf Abongile Sonjica played the role of the backline's “general” to a “T” allowing his backs to exploit the spaces. Centre pairing Lunathi Nxele and Mihlali Nobomvu kept the defence wondering and both had a stand-out game.
