Big home win for Selborne

Match Report

Selborne College scored six tries to beat Graeme College 44-5 in East London on Saturday.  The match was played in warm, dry conditions in front of a sizeable and appreciative crowd who were treated to an impressive Selborne performance.

Selborne started their dominance of the match by regaining the ball from the first kick-off which led to scrumhalf Craig Shone scoring. Selborne kept the ball through a number of phases and used their forwards to run off flyhalf Lindsay Weyer to get over the advantage line.

Lock Rudi van der Zee scored the next try to give Selborne a 10-0 lead. Van der Zee was nearly on hand to score from the kick-off after a good break by flank Nkosinathi Sam who linked to Shone, but van der Zee could not hold onto a long pass on the Graeme 22.

Selborne kept pressurising and Weyer kicked the first of his two penalties and four conversions to increase the gap. Just before half-time wing Kwamuwawe Banda finished off a good backline movement to give Selborne a 20 point lead.

Selborne never allowed Graeme to settle and scored with the first movement after half-time. The Selborne backline constantly looked dangerous and fullback Qhawe Magwentshu joined the line at pace to score.

The next try came when lock Jarryd Kriel picked up from a ruck and found no defence in front of him and strolled over – the score now was 34-0. Poor Graeme defence continued for the rest of the match and Selborne missed many try scoring opportunities.

Vice captain Jeffrey Williams scored his side’s last try under the poles after a simple switch with Weyer and he went over untouched.

Graeme came into the match in the last five minutes and prop Welmon Botes scored a consolation try. Graeme woke up too late, however, and Selborne were the only side in the match.
