Big Welkom win for Gim in FNB Classic

Match Report

In an FNB Clkassic Clash in Welkom on Saturday, hosts Welkom Gimnasioum were much too strong for Goudveld and won 45-11.

It's a huge day in Welkom when this annual derby takes place and there wqere some 10 000 peiople present to enjoy the fun – and the rugby. There were Harley Davidsons and sky-divers, champagne girls and ceremonies and lots of singing and cheering.

The Gim had much more to cheer about tghan than the Gouties as their forwards dominated from start to finish. It is significant that their forwards scored four of the side's seven tries. With their tight forwards on top the three loose forwards – link Francois Erwee at eighthman, committed, Corne Krige-eque fetcher Phillip Oberholzer and hard Dean van Rensburg – had the freedom of the field.

Behind the scrum centre Arno van Zyl, who had had an excellent Craven Week earlier in the month, was the big play-maker. He has the outstanding ability to take the outside gap.

Goudveld actually scored first. Gim were on their way to scoring a try when Gouties left wing Juan Faber intercepted a long pass from Van Zyl and raced the long metres for a try just when it seemed that Gim were certain to score.

After that it was all Gim as they piled on five tries in the half while Goudveld could add only two penalties. The half-time score was 33-11.

In the second half the Gouties concentrated on defence and nuisance value. It did not win the match but it limited Gim to just two tries. The visitors did not give up despite the odds stacked against them.

This si the second year in a row that Gim have scored over 40 points against tghe rivals, and thehy are set tto have ten of their current 15 back again next year.

On the day Welkom Gimnasium won five of ther seven matches, losubng just the 3rd XV match (15-14 to a last-minuite penalty) and the 4th XV match.
