Big win for College
Match report
Played as usual on a Wednesday, Maritzburg College had a big 48-0 over neighbours Voortrekker at Goldstone's.
For College, it represented the middle of a very busy period, with Pretoria Boys High on the previous Saturday, Natal Schools’ trials (involving thirteen College players) the previous day and Hilton to follow three days later.
College took control from the start and, although it took nearly fifteen minutes to record the first try, managed four tries and 27 points in the first half.
With a surfeit of good ball, College played an expansive game and regularly brought the outside backs and fullback into action.
More of the same followed in the second half before it was decided to rest players and a plethora of replacements took to the field. This, not unexpectedly, affected College’s rhythm and they scored no points in the final fifteen minutes. Nevertheless, the score had already mounted to 48-0, with three second-half tries.
Voortrekker defended bravely and, in the dying minutes, placed College under some pressure, but could not find their way to the try-line.
