Big win for LSEN on Day 2
The SA LSEN team opened Day 2 of the Academy Week being played at HTS Drostdy in Worcester with a huge win over Border CD.
The LSEN (Learners with Special Educational Needs) was chosen at the end of last week after the LSEN Craven Week in Potchefstroom. Last year they won the same fixture 48-5 and then went on to beat Griquas Country Districts.
Free State, whose side is chosen mostly from Grey, Louis Botha and Jim Fouché, were beaten by Limpopo, their second loss of the week.
It was a still, rain-free and wind-free day but bitterly cold as the snow-capped mountains looked down.

KwaZulu-Natal vs Eastern Province, 61-12
Spear-headed by a dazzling display from flyhalf Bader-Werner Pretorius, KwaZulu-Natal totally outplayed Eastern Province in this match and scored at will in the first half.
Pretorius managed to find holes in the defences with his passing and running and his team mates revelled in the momentum and space created by him.
Eastern Province scored a late try in the first half, but hardly had a look in.
It was more of the same in the second, with KwaZulu-Natal proving to be just too strong, fast and skilful for their opponents.
Scorers:
KwaZulu-Natal:
Tries: Bader-Werner Pretorius 2, Donovan du Randt, Jaydon Morgan, Marco Palvie, Masikane Mazwi, Simiso Buthelezi, Teigan Erasmus 2.
Cons: Pretorius 4, Buthelezi.
Pens: Pretorius2.
Eastern Province:
Tries: Michael de Marco, Yomelela Keswa.
Con: Nkosikona Ntebe
Western Province vs Blue Bulls, 17-8
Western Province outplayed the Blue Bulls in broken play and in the line-outs, but also defended like Trojans in their win over their traditional foe. Both teams have exciting and quick backs and used them well, but in the end it was a huge tackle by midfielder Taigh Schoor on the massive Blue Bulls lock Brenden Verster – with the try-line begging – that typified the coastal team’s effort.
A close match by two of the best teams at the week was eventually determined by the better use of scoring opportunities and team work. Three tries to one also tells its own story.
Scorers:
Western Province:
Tries: Calvin Nell, Michael Meyer, Mujaahid van der Hoven.
Con: Calvin Nell
Blue Bulls:
Try: Carlo de Nysschen.
Pen: Hendrik Mulder.
Eastern Province Country Districts vs Red Valke, 19-7
Eastern Province Country Districts kept on their winning ways by beating Red Valke in a lively match. Both teams tried to play the passing game, but pressurised defence saw many balls dropped or passes going astray. This resulted in a try-less first stanza
In the second half more phases were played which opened up more gaps to exploit. The speedier Eastern Province outside backs used this to their advantage and scored a couple of telling tries.
Scorers:
Eastern Province Country Districts:
Tries: Tries: Christiaan Nel, Glen Flitoor, Sinekhaya Vulindlu.
Cons: Christiaan Nel 2
Red Valke:
Try: Marnus Gruber.
Con: Gruber.
Namibia vs Griffons Country Districts, 20-12
In a lively match with numerous scoring opportunities, Namibia finally got the better of Griffons, who played well at times, but were also guilty of giving the ball away in their own half.
This was well exploited by the Namibians, who ran hard and straight and deserved their win.
Scorers:
Namibia:
Tries: Cameron Langenhoven, Cliven Loubser, Desmond Khitago.
Con: Tristan Mouton.
Pen: Cliven Loubser.
Griffons Country Districts:
Tries: Bongani Mkhuma, Relebohjle Sekhobo.
Con: Angeloo Pienaar
Golden Lions vs Border, 27-22
It was a try-fest on the main field between two teams who executed well and played with a lot of purpose, especially on attack.
Play switched from one side to the other, with Border given the crowd massive entertainment with two long-range tries from turn-overs.
The second half was equally tight, but entertaining. A late penalty by Border seemed to seal the game, but the Lions struck back in the last minute to score the winning try.
Scorers:
Golden Lions:
Tries: Hacjivah Dayimani, Ntobeko Mkhwanazi, Tapiwa Mangwana, Tiaan Schutte.
Cons: Gihard Visagie, Justin Taylor.
Pen: Gihard Visagie
Border:
Tries: Bubule Gongqa, Bulela Sotyelelwa, Jason Bantom.
Cons: Josh Alderman.
Pen: Josh Alderman
Boland vs Pumas, 24-13
Dogged defence helped Boland get the better of a willing Pumas side who played a lot of rugby with very little reward.
The visiting team had most of the play in the first half, with Boland not finding the final pass on many occasions. The second half saw the hosts finding each other with their passing and interplay and outfoxing the Pumas defence, who let in three tries.
Scorers:
Boland:
Tries: Gevin Scheepers, Jaydrin Kotze 2.
Cons: Wynand du Toit 3.
Pen: Jacean Klaase.
Pumas:
Try: Ian Truter.
Con: Wessel Muller.
Pens: Muller 2.
Blue Valke vs Leopards, 16-13
It was the Wernich Human show on the outer field this morning as the Transvalia High School pivot scored all 16 points for his team against the Leopards.
It was a tight affair, with try scoring opportunities hard to come by due to good defence and poor handling on both sides, with penalty kicks the only method of scoring in the first half.
The second half saw two tries, with Human’s late converted effort confirming the result. A yellow card to the Leopards cost them dearly in the last couple of minutes and the Valke could capitalise.
Scorers:
Blue Valke:
Try: Wernich Human.
Con: Wernich Human.
Pens: Wernich Human 3
Leopards:
Try: Jan Welgemoed.
Con: Johan Barnard.
Pens: Johan Ten Cate 2
LSEN vs Border Country Districts, 40-0
LSEN showed their true colours on Tuesday, clearly benefitting from more time playing together as a team. They ran the Border Country Districts team off their feet, scoring six delightful tries in the process.
The Border team showed some resistance in the opening half, but in the last 35 minutes could only watch at the LSEN outside backs broke the line at will.
Scorers:
LSEN:
Tries: Adward Dirks, Devon van der Westhuizen 2, Matthew Alexander, Willton Isaacs 2.
Cons: Johan Visser 4, Easton Pillay.
Golden Lions XV vs Pumas Country Districts, 22-18
A strong start by the Golden Lions XV gave them the needed buffer to hold out against a Pumas Country Districts side who refused to stop trying. Two early tries helped the Lions to a deserving lead at the break and when they scored after the restart, looked set for an easy win. The Pumas came back at them though and a late try made the last two minutes very exciting indeed, as they pushed for final glory. The Golden Lions held out for a deserving win.
Scorers:
Golden Lions:
Tries: Andile Ngobe, Damian Diedericks, JJ Liebenberg, Zandré du Plessis.
Con: Rashard Fuller.
Pumas Country District:
Tries: Carl Jacobsy, Eon Bumrmann, Manqoba Mnisi.
Pen: Carl Jacobsy
Limpopo vs Free State, 23-19
A spirited second half performance by the Limpopo Blue Bulls saw them dump the Free State, who suffered a second defeat against a more skilful opponent. Spearheaded by good play in the midfield, where Frans Botha scored a hat-trick, the Far North team showed more purpose and drive when on attack.
For the Free State it was again a matter of playing rugby in the wrong areas of the field and paying the price for that.
Scorers:
Limpopo:
Tries: Frans Botha 3.
Con: Hardus Geldenhuys.
Pens: Hardus Geldenhuys, Tony Botha.
Free State:
Tries: George Mokhomo, Sentle Lehoko, Stefan Wessels.
Cons: Christiaan Schutte 2.
Boland XV vs Griquas Country Districts, 16-0
It was another entertaining clash for the home crowd, with Boland XV running out deserved winners against Griquas Country Districts, who only had themselves to blame for conceding a number of penalties. This enabled the hosts to kick three penalties and when Boland scored late in the second half, there was no way back for the team from the Northern Cape.
Scorers:
Boland XV:
Try: Earl Adonis.
Con: Caleb Louw.
Pens: Isak van der Westhuizen 3.
Griffons vs South Western Districts, 20-17
The Griffons managed a great win over South Western Districts after lock Melton Wentzel was shown a red card after 45 minutes of play. South Western Districts scored immediately after that to go 17-15 up and all looked doomed for the Northern Free State team. A great try by scrumhalf Philip Mare (his second) got the Griffons back into the lead with 17 minutes left. As hard as they tried, South Western Districts could not get the final score, even when Griffons lost another player with a yellow card and only had 13 players on the field.
Scorers:
Griffons:
Tries: Adriaan Odendaal, Phillip Mare 2.
Con: Louis Spershott.
Pen: Louis Spershott.
South Western Districts:
Tries: Clayton Kiewitz, Cornelius Otto, JP du Plessis.
Con: Maurice White.
Griquas vs KwaZulu-Natal Country Districts, 29-12
Griquas took command of this match early on and capitalised well on the ill-discipline of the KwaZulu-Natal team, who not only conceded two yellow cards, but a red card as well with Kyle Rhode being sent to the showers ten minutes from time.
With the opponents in disarray most of the time, Griquas kept their cool and ran into the spaces well, resulting in a hat-trick to Jan Cloete, flanker from the Kimberley side.
Scorers:
Griquas:
Tries: Jan Cloete (3), Nicolaas Roets, Wayne Botma.
Con: Riandri Muller
KwaZulu-Natal Country Districts:
Tries: Tries: Devin Aspden, Pieter Keeve.
Con: Ryan Elliott.
