Bishops in ancient Stellenbosch match

Both schools were church foundations – Bishops in 1849 as Diocesan College, the school of the Anglican bishop of Cape Town and Paul Roos in 1866 through the efforts of Dominee JH Neethling of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Canon George Ogilvie taught Bishops to play in 1861. Bishops taught SACS to play and a SACS student, apparently surnamed Vos, went to Stellenbosch and taught them to play.

Getting  an exact record of results is not easy, not just in finding them but in working out who the players were. The earliest record of a match between Bishops and Stellenbosch is 1878 – 139 years ago. Bishops won that by 15 goals to nil.

It's hard to work out what the names meant. As both Bishops and Victoria College were part universities of a sort, it's not easy to work out what was the school and which players were schoolboys because they played on ability, regardless of age. It's hard enough to sort out Bishops but a tangled web when we come to Paul Roos.

First there was Stellenbosch – a town side that could well have included students, in fact probably included students and may even have been made up solely of students/schoolboys. Bishops played Stellenbosch three times, starting in 1878. There was Stellenbosch College. Then there was Victoria College from 1893, then Stellenbosch Under-19 and Stellenbosch Boys' High, then from 1911 Stellenbosch Boys' High and then, in 1950, Paul Roos Gymnasium.

The two schools have more old boys who have played international rugby than any other schools. Paul Roos has 51 Springboks, Bishops 43. (The names are below.)
