Bishops in St Andrew's thriller

On Thursday 26 March 2015 St Andrew’s College took on Bishops from Cape Town in their annual rugby derby in Grahamstown. Bishops won the match but there was must more to this thrilling game of great skill than just the final score.

The 1st XV, 2nd XV, Under-16 A, Under-15A and Under-14A all went up against their respective Bishops opposition and acquitted themselves well. Special mention must be made of the Under-16 A team who recorded a memorable victory for St Andrew's, playing some fantastic rugby in trying conditions as they ran out 50-28 winners on Lower.

The 1st XV started at a furious pace with both teams showing a willingness to run the ball and shift the opposition from side to side. The early exchanges were fairly even as the teams traded tries, but towards the end of the half College gained the ascendency and scored some thrilling tries as flyhalf, Anthony Dakin, controlled the game through the closing stages of the half. A try on the stroke of half-time meant that College led 26-14 at the break.

The second half started at the same furious pace and both teams were producing a fantastic advert for schoolboy rugby. Bishops were the first to score after some sustained pressure, but College bounced back and a great solo effort from Macome Pringle saw College stretch their lead. Both teams were throwing everything they had to clinch it for their school and the tension on Lower was palpable as the teams set for the final scrum.

Unfortunately it was heartbreak for the large College crowd that had gathered on Lower as Bishops sneaked in for the final score to clinch the game 35-33. It was an unfortunate loss for the College team who certainly produced a performance worthy of a win.
