Boishaai too good for Bosch
Match Report
Paarl Boys' High honoured one of their most famous rugby Old Boys, Corné Krige, when they beat Rondebosch 27-0 at Newlands on Friday night.
The match was played as a curtainraiser to the match between the Vodacom Western Province Corné Krige XV and a World XV, a testimonial match for Corné Krige with the proceeds going to the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Funs for injured rugby players.
This year Paarl Boys' High are not quiet the power they have been in the past and Rondebosch are having perhaps the worst season in their long and glorious rugby history, but both teams gave it their energetic best from the start, running the ball on all opportunities.
Boys' High won because they ran more effectively than Rondebosch did. They handled better and were faster. Even in the second half when Rondebosch enjoyed a majority of possession and territory, Boys' High did the scoring, adding 12 points to their tally of 15 in the first half.
Line-outs were a problem for Rondebosch where they had especially Ya Ya Hartzenburg to contend with, and only the Under-19 laws saved the Rondebosch from utter disaster in the scrums. Those laws limit a forward shove to 1,5 metres, putting legal brakes on the dominant pack.
Helping to create an atmosphere was a large contingent of Boys' High boys behind the poles on the Pickard Stand. They sang and cheered. Helping the match along was young Matt Kemp, the youngest referee ever on South African referees' panels, a man with a great feel for the game.
The first try came when Rondebosch kicked downfield from their own 22 and right wing caught the kick, ran, beating two, kicked ahead, outstripped the de fence, contained his speed, gathered the ball and scored. Scrumhalf Alberto Gava converted from far out.
Boys' High were close again but eighthman Marko Kriek was held up over the line, but then Gava kicked a simple penalty from in front.
From the kick-off Rondebosch got close with a charge-down which was carried over by Boys' High but the scrum was a waste of time as the Boys' High pack put pressure on Rondebosch.
Next Boys' High were close as Gideon Louw broke on the outside. The ball was lost forward to give Rondebosch the onus of a scrum near their own line. Rondebosch heeled but the pressure was there and captain Thys Koch Burden fell on a loose ball and scored.
Both sides kept running in the second half. Penalties were normally tap kicks. One such tap kick in front of the Rondebosch posts prop Dario Cistolini burst through to score under the posts. Gava's conversion made it 22-0 after a long period of sustained attacking by Rondebosch.
Rondebosch's attacks tended to be keen and determined but unable to get across the advantage line.
Stuart Hablutzel, who had a lively game on the flank for Rondebosch broke brilliantly down the tight-hand touch line before he grubbered ahead. The grubber petered out in touch and with it Rondebosch's hopes of a try.
Instead Boys' High scored when simple passing to the man next to you produced a try for flyhalf Marko Kershoff who was now playing fullback.
