Boland Landbou just beat SACS
Match Report
In wet conditions Boland Landbou’s heavier pack laid the platform for an unconvincing 8-5 win against visitors SACS. The teams were evenly matched in most facets of play but Landbou’s superior pack kept SACS on the back foot.
Boland Landbou had the stiff breeze at their backs in the first half and dominated territory and possession.
SACS had one very good scoring opportunity when they hit the blindside and worked an overlap, left-wing Dean Holland getting close to scoring in the corner.
SACS were guilty of kicking some good ball away while poor handling cost Boland Landbou on many occasions. Boland Landbou’s try came from a line-out drive, the loose forwards combining well and breaking clear before offloading to hooker and captain CG Stouman to score. Pieter Esterhuyse missed the conversion from out wide.
SACS needed to score early in the second half and got close twice, livewire centre Liam Slatem making two telling half-breaks but unable to link up his support players.
Boland Landbou’s game plan was obvious and they played for field position for their powerhouse pack. Continued pressure close the SACS line saw them close to scoring on a few occasions but they had to settle for a solitary three points in the second half.
SACS had another good scoring chance late on as great hands from fullback Warwick Denman put winger Chace Kruger clear but the cover defence closed him down.
It was an entertaining game in which both teams tried to play attractive rugby in slippery conditions. The Boland Landbou pack had the edge up front and as is so often the case this proved telling. SACS did not receive enough front-foot ball for their exciting backs.
