Border CD take a hammering again

Border Country Districts looked very out of place for the second time as they succumbed to another heavy defeat, this time 69-0 from Namibia.

It was a game that was never going to be pretty for the much smaller and lighter Border team who had to front up to a rather large, stocky Namibian team

There were plenty of penalties from the Namibians and handling errors from Border that made for a stop-start first 10 minutes.

However, it was Stefan Potgieter, the scrappy scrumhalf for Namibia, was the first to get his name on the score sheet after wrestling the ball from the back of a ruck he got to his feet and sniped through a gap to get the score. PW Steenkamp converted with ease.

The second try of the game came from a well worked set piece move – the classic dummy, scissors, pop! – Dvan Rossouw slicing through the defense that was in disarray to dot down with little fuss. Again the extras were added from Steenkamp

Namibia got their third try of the match through Steenkamp who sold an incredible dummy in a tight spot right against the touch line to throw the defense, and despite a tripping up short of the line, he had enough momentum to get over. Steenkamp could not convert his own try from the corner however.

After a poor choice to take the ball back over the line, Border got caught and conceded a 5 metre scrum.  Milan van Wyk was on hand to take the ball on the other wing once it had been swung through the hands to score his try and Namibia's fourth.

Namibia led at the break by 24-0.

Namibia came out for the second half firing, with their wing Unamasa Kavita setting up an easy kick for Steenkamp after dotting down under the posts, Border's defense unable to deal with the size and speed of the foreigners. Steenkamp made no work of the conversion

Rossouw got on to the score sheet again with another impressive run, finding some space along the touch line he glided through leaving the defense flat footed again. Another good kick from Steenkamp saw the lead extended.

A fantastic pick up off the bootlaces by Janry Du Toit after a long, floated pass across the field saw the reserve back crack on the pace and score the seventh try.

Another dominant scrum by the Namibians saw an easy try being scored by the big No.8 Adriaan Booysen, he broke from the back and barged his way over to make it 48-0.

After a barn-storming run by Jakob Breedt the ball made its way to Van Wyk in the centre of the park where he cracked on some great pace to split the defense and score his second try under the posts. Stiaan van der Merwe kicked the conversion.

Off the kick off Kavita got his hands off the ball and broke down the side of the field, he was dragged down just short by some determined defense, but as the ball was stolen off the deck by Border, Booysen tackled ball-and-all and ripped it back to walk over the try line for his second – Booysen then kicked the conversion with a drop goal.

Rossouw managed to get his hat-trick on the final moment of the game, a scrappy turnover caught Border off their guard as the centre picked up and ran straight through for the score under the posts.

It was an obvious mismatch of opposition, but Border do deserve credit for sticking it out until the final whistle. Their work at the breakdown also needs to be commended.

Man of the Match: Impressive with his direct running was Divan Rossouw, claiming a hat-trick and terrorizing the defense through out the game. Captain Adriaan Booysen was another one who looked the real-deal, a strong and athletic loose forward. However, most impressive  was the big 110kg loose head Jakob Breedt, it took six players to bring him down and his work on defense was exemplary – for that he gets the reward.
