Bosch Beat Bishops at Home
The main rugby field at Rondebosch Boys’ High, now called the Tinkie Heyns Field, was packed again at lunchtime on Saturday when Rondebosch hosted near-neighbours Bishops yet again in one of the very best schools rugby derbies in South Africa, and, as happened in the second term, hosts defeated the visitors. 21-10 this time and a thoroughly deserved victory.
Bishops and Rondebosch have both had good seasons in 2019, Bishops slightly more so, and in their first meeting on the Piley Rees Bishops one 36-26. The result was reversed in this one on the Tinkie Heyns, the field recently named after a legend of Rondebosch and UCT and a of Western Province rugby, Professor IdeV Heyns, a resident of Mason House for decades, a dean of the faculty of education at UCT and elected a life member of the Western Province Rugby Football Union – a man born to serve, it seems.
As always the match 0-p and its watchers – were enthusiastic as Bishops ran out in their blue followed by Rondebosch, changed from blue to white to avoid a clash.
Rondebosch kicked off and Bishops did what they do best – run with the ball in hand. But in this match, the Rondebosch defence was so organised that there was no sweeping, passing movement from Bishops. Instead Bishops hopes were pinned on individual runners, of whom scrumhalf Liam Kloosman was the most obvious.
Strangely for two teams so attack-minded, there were no points in the first half – lots of activity but no points at all. Bishops had the best opportunities in the half – a long run by Kloosman and a diagonal by flyhalf Sacha Mngomezulu, but neither was really close.
The first score of the match came early in the second half when a long penalty kick by Mngomezulu soared over the posts. 3-0.
Rondebosch flyhalf Kian Davis opened up the Bishops defence and his side were soon bashing over and over at the line will scrumhalf Ishma-eel Safodien grounded the ball against the posts for a try which Davis converted. 7-3 to Rondebosch. Bishops did not regain the lead.
The score boosted Rondebosch’s confidence and another clean break by Davis saw Rondebosch going wide left where speedy fullback Dalvon Blood dummied, accelerated and scored. Again Davis converted. 21-3.
Bishops would rarely play a match without a try, and from a scrum a long pass by Kloosman sent centre Oliver Jones in for a try, which Mngomezulu converted. 14-10 with 12 minutes to play.
Those 12 minutes belonged to Rondebosch, and when they won the ball near the half-way line Blood raced down the left touchline and swept inside for a try at the posts. 21-10.
When the final whistle went, a horde of gleeful Rondebosch boys bounced onto the field to praise their heroes.
