Boys' High Overcome Paul Roos

In a Premier Interschools match in Paarl on Saturday, Paarl Boys’ High deserved their 29-16 victory over Paul Roos Gymnasium of Stellenbosch, scoring as they did three tries to one.

The half-time score was 16-9 in Boys’ High’s favour.

Kian Meadon of Boys’ High scored a penalty goal, and then Kade Wolhuter scored two to give Paul Roos a 6-3 lead after 12 minutes.

But then Paul Roos were forced into heroic defence as Boys’ High battered at the line. Gideon van Wyk was close, Tyler Bock was held up and then Niel Venter. Boys’ High had three successive five-metre scrums and then tough centre Quan Horn burst though two defenders to score. 10-6.

Wolhuter kicked a third penalty and Meadon another two. Meadon’s third penalty was from three metres inside his own half.

The half ended with a rare Paul Roos attack as their powerful captain Jarod Cairns led the charge that ended right under the Boys’ High posts, as half-time broke.

The second half started with Paul Roos on the attack with hefty Robbie Rodgers in the van. Hooker Meiring Ebersohn was held up over the line but a penalty for obstruction from the ensuing five-metre scrum put an end to the attack.

Tyler Bocks won a turnover at a tackle and Meadon broke clean through. With no close support, he grubbered ahead into the Paul Roos in-goal where eighthman Gideon van Wyk beat fullback Cade Croy to the bouncing ball and scored. 21-9.

Paul Roos attacked and a penalty gave them a five-metre lineout. They bashed and then went left with some clever passing till Croy gave Luke Burger a pass and he sped over for a try which Wolhuter converted. 21-16, and a Paul Roos victory was not beyond the realm of possibility.

Meadon suffered severe cramps, and fullback Jacques Rossouw took a penalty chance just inside the Paul Roos half. His left boot sent the ball soaring over the posts, and Boys’ High led 24-16 with five minutes to play.

At a wedding feast in Cana of Galilee some two thousand years ago, they saved the best wine for last. In this match Boys’ High saved the best try till last.

They won a scrum just outside their 22 and near the touchline on their left. Van Wyk picked up and charged. He gave to scrumhalf Wian van der Sandt on his right and the ball went wide to Angelo Ochse on the right wing. The tall speedster came swerving infield, beating wrong-footed defenders till he raced over for a try well to the left of the Paul Roos posts.

The whistle went and joyful Boys’ High Old Boys flooded the field.
