Brackenfell take SACS scalp

Brackenfell High School deservedly beat a listless South African College High School (SACS) 31-26. Brackenfell were full value for their win scoring four great tries on a lovely, if chilly, morning in the Northern Suburbs.

Brackenfell scored first via a drop goal from their flyhalf Rohan Conradie, who was exceptional on the day. SACS struck back with two good tries, one directly from a set-piece and the other after a period of phase play. They were scored by the only two SACS players who showed any resolve on the day, centre Keagan de Villiers and wing Damian Rawstorne, and put the visitors 12-3 ahead.

Brackenfell came back firing though and crucially began to realise they could more than mix it with SACS. The hosts grew in confidence and scored from an 8/9 move in which freed up right-wing Brandon Collins for the first of his three tries. Brackenfell surged back up field from the kick-off and took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Collins popped up on the left after a skilful build up. Conradie never missed a kick all day and Brackenfell, with their tails up, led 17-12 at half-time.

Brackenfell went further ahead when flank Jean-Marc Fuchs scored off the back of a maul. De Villiers got his second try for SACS with another powerful run but two unforced errors from SACS saw them allow Brackenfell the chance to restore their twelve point lead. Another 8/9 saw the ball again passed to Collins who chipped the defence and re-gathered to score and make it 31-19.

SACS scored from a tap penalty and had three minutes left to score and convert for the win. SACS had two great chances, one which saw their replacement centre cut clean through only to drop the ball with the line at his mercy and one when their flyhalf dropped the ball with a huge overlap out to the right. The try were not to be and Brackenfell celebrated a wonderful win!
