Brakkies fight for a draw

Hoërskool Brackenfell and Hoërskool Tygerberg met in an FNB Classic Clash at Brackenfell on Saturday and played to a 22-all draw.

This interschools clash at Brackenfell produced exciting rugby as the two sides exchanged the lead on numerous occasions. In fact, in the final 10 minutes the lead changed hands no fewer than four times and the supporters on both sides emotions varied between elation and despair in this period.

In the first half Tygerberg were full of running with loose forwards Uwe Geissler (flank) and Juanro Augustus (No.8), ably supported by captain and lock Juan Esterhuizen, won good metres on the drive. Both centre Robin Kuys and especially Ivan Kuntz proved to be a handful in midfield.

Tygerberg’s half-time lead of 10-6 was well deserved as they scored two tries in the process.

After the break Brackenfell started playing with more confidence. Dudley Archer (flank) had a blinder in general play. His flank partner Luvuyo Mose was also affective on the ground, winning vital turn-overs.

However, Tygerberg scored another good try through some slick handling, to increase their lead.

Brackenfell, who have not won an interschools clash in five attempts, refused to give up and well taken try by centre Reinard Groenewald, coupled with the unerring boot of man-of-the-match Rohan Conradie (flyhalf), turned the tide as Brackenfell took a 19-17 lead, with five minutes remaining.

However, Tygerberg scored their fourth try by fullback Marco Stassen to retake the lead. The Tygers’ normally reliable goal-kicker Wynand MacLachlan had an off day with the boot and missed a vital conversion.

On the other hand Conradie sealed the draw with the last kick of the match as he duly slotted a penalty from right in front.

Things are looking up for Brackenfell as all their age group sides recorded victories. Their U16A side ended the season unbeaten.
