Cape Schools Week Continues
From time to time there has been talk of stopping the Cape Schools Week which has taken place every second year since 1980 and is this year been held at Grey in Port Elizabeth.
The schools met on Sunday and resolved to continue with the week but with a change.
There had been thought that shifting the week to Easter might help because of the problem of some sort of conflict with the National Weeks. This year Western Province gave the players it had selected for the Craven Week and the Academy Week the option of going to Cape Schools Week or playing for its teams.
The players chosen from the affected schools – Boland Landbou, Paarl Gim, Rondebosch and SACS – are going to the Craven Week or the Academy Week, which has meant that at the Cape Schools Week all four of the schools had lost top players, Gim seven of them.
The idea was that every second year the Cape Schools Week teams would not attend the various Easter Tournaments.
That idea was also rejected.
Instead that it was agreed to reduce the Cape Schools Week to two matches for each team. At present there are three matches in five days at the end of a rigorous rugby term. Now there would be two matches in four days.
The next Cape Schools Week, in 2017, will be at Rondebosch Boys' High.
