Captain's profile: Altus Geldenhuis
Hoërskool Aliwal-Noord captain Altus Geldenhuis said his team has been working hard on their fitness after the school holidays.
Aliwal-Noord will meet Queenstown rivals Hoërskool Hangklip in their annual Classic Clash on Saturday and Geldenhuis believes his team is in good shape for the encounter.
"We are working hard on our fitness after the holiday. We just want to go out and enjoy the game and do our best.
"We are expecting a hard physical battle up front from Hangklip and at the same time a quick paced backline. There will be some big hits and some nice running rugby," said Geldenhuis.
The 18-year-old lock, who is in his second year playing in the school's first team also has a captain's philosophy that reads like a seasoned professional.
"A captain does the dirty work for the sake of the team," Geldenhuis said.
"A captain must be a good follower. A captain must set the example and finally a captain must seek and work for a good spirit and chemistry in his team and not for the applause of the crowd."
Geldenhuis, who said the highlight of his career was being chosen for his school's first team when he was in Grade 11, also has some big shoes to fill when he runs out as captain on Saturday.
"It is a great privilege and honour being named captain. I can follow in the footsteps of legends I admired as young boy.
"I just want to lead the team to the best of my ability.
I love organising and I think I give a bit of structure to the team. I have been in the leadership position before and I think experience also counts in my favour," he added.
Geldenhuis has plans to study Agriculture at the University of the Free State next year.
