Captain’s profile: Edwin Sass

Give Tygerberg captain Edwin Sass a bit of space and he is bound to produce a piece of individual brilliance.

Sass, who operates at outside centre, has the pure speed and silky footwork defenders dread.

One-on-one, he’ll beat his man nine times out of ten. Naturally, this makes Sass an ideal Sevens player, but add to this his 1.84m, 90kg frame and it’s easy to understand why he excels in both Sevens and the 15-man code.

His rugby curriculum vitae bears testament to this: Western Province Under-12, Western Province Under-16 Elite squad, Western Province Sevens, Western Province Academy and South African Academy, all squads Sass has bolstered with his attacking flair.

“Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game,” he says.

The daring Sass will lead his school out for the final time against Brackenfell High on Saturday and will aim to guide them to their third victory over their interschools rivals in as many years.
