Captain's Profile: Garann Kriek
When the Potch Gimmies take on the Volkies this weekend in their FNB Classic Clash, Gimmies captain Garann Kriek knows it is just another game.
On the eve of a big derby like this one it is easy to get carried away and lose yourself in the hype and the build-up but for Kriek it is all about staying focused and getting the job done.
"We are really positive heading into this game but we know that we have to take it as any other game.
"It is a big derby for the schools and for the town but for us it is just another rugby match," Kriek mentioned.
The scrumhalf is faced with another challenge when he leads his side out onto the field on Saturday, he is only in grade 11.
"I am Under-17 this year and I am in Grade 11 so it can sometimes be a bit difficult being captain but the team is very supportive of me and they are very positive," he added.
The Gimmies side have had a reasonably good season and Kriek is happy with the results that they have had so far this year.
"We have had a good season so far, we came third in the PUk-Reeks and only just lost the Florida so we are doing alright," Kriek said.
For a boy growing up in Potchefstroom and watching this derby it must be a massive honour to eventually play in one of them.
"This is one of the highlights of my rugby career.
"When I was in Grade 8 watching this game I always hoped that I would be standing on the field singing the National Anthem in front of the whole town," he added.
