Captain's profile: Gerhard Steenekamp

Potchefstroom Gimnasium captain Gerhard Steenekamp has played provincial rugby against some of the country's top young players and will now be involved in his second first team Classic Clash against Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom on Saturday.
Steenekamp played in the Under-19 Provincial Championships for North West Leopards where he played against teams like Western Province, Lions and Blue Bulls. He is now firmly focussed on bagging another win against Volkies.
"The whole build-up to this game was placed on keeping the guys focussed for the game. This is one game you have to go out and win," said Steenekamp.
The big No.8, who is in his final year at school, says he cannot wait lead his team out on the field in the big derby game, which has captured the attention of many in the academic town of Potchefstroom.
"I was very excited when I was named captain and I am honoured to lead my team. As a captain I aim to lead by example on the field," he added.
Having already played in this fixture last year, Steenekamp is aware of what awaits him and his team when they make the short trip to Volkies.
"They are big and they are going to play the game upfront. They are going to keep the game in a physical battle.
"We have an experienced side with only one injury. We only lost one game this season and we will be vicious," Steenekamp added.
Steenekamp has plans to study Agriculture when he is done with school and continue his rugby career where he hopes to play for the national team one day.
