Captain's profile: James Brewer

The 18-year-old knows the feeling of claiming the Triple Crown – beating all the Southern Suburbs school, i.e. Rondebosch, Bishops and Wynberg – having claimed the feat in 2015.

"Over my five years in high school, Wynberg has had pretty good first teams and if I remember correctly we have only won a few games. Last year, we won at home and were the favourites for the return game but Wynberg then turned things around at their place.

"This year we won at home again but we will be hoping to rectify that error and to do the double at Wynberg in their 175th year anniversary. We know that Wynberg has a big pack and always look to dominate physically. They like to maul a lot as well so it's going to be hard work for us forwards once again.

"Over the last few weeks have lost my lock partner Cameron Laurenson and No.8 Alex Halvorsen. They are both big boys and integral members of our pack but the pack remains mostly matriculants. We have a few Grade 11s in our backline but have also lost our fullback Michael Abrahams.

"Nevertheless, we have a mature team like Wynberg," Brewer said.

SACS' big pack have managed to mix it with the Boland schools this season and Brewer views their season as "good without being great".

"We have had some good results like beating Maritzburg College, Bishops, Rondebosch and Wynberg – once each so far. Unfortunately, the reason we have made a bit of a name for ourselves this season is the number of near misses we have had against the Boland schools.

"We have pushed all four of them [Paarl Boys, Paarl Gim, Boland Landbou, Paul Roos] all the way and came within four points of beating Paarl Gim and Paul Roos – both away from home. Those performances caught the attention of schoolboy fans. One or two wins there [away from home] would have made this a truly great season," he added.

The lock is able to get involved in all aspects of play as he is one of the ball carriers, so is constantly in the action and makes the line-out calls but has the ability to remain reasonably cool under pressure.

Brewer, who is hopeful of studying Commerce or Finance at either UCT or the University of Stellenbosch, wants his players to be hungry and desperate for one more week.
