Captain's profile: JC Conradie

Saturday could be an emotional day in Conradie's life as he contemplates to shut the door on an illustrious career due to a few head injuries he sustained over the years. The young man's talent ensured him a place in the 2015 Eastern Province Country District Under-18 Academy Week side, while in 2016 he got promoted to the EPCD U18 Craven Week side.

However, it is his role as captain of the first XV he cherishes the most.

"The highlight of my rugby career would really be the special bond we have as a team this year, they make me want to do better as a player and captain. It is truly a massive honour to have an opportunity to lead such a great side. It's something you can't explain to anyone and I feel privileged.

"My captain's philosophy is simple, as a captain I believe you should constantly prove yourself and try to gain your team's respect because they are part of your success story," Conradie said.

The match-up between the two schools has always been highly competitive, and once again the two sides are expected to dish up the same enticing rugby the Graaff-Reinett population hopes for.

Hoër Volkskool have been struggling with injuries throughout the season but the skipper is hopeful that his side can secure the rare back-to-back victory.

"The season feels like a marathon. We started the year off slow with loads of injuries but still managed to get some quite pleasing results and have shown signs of improvement. We head into this match with a slight advantage, we have the privilege to field a full strength team, which consists of 10 matriculants and eight players who has two years' experience in the first XV.

"Despite our slight advantage I never underestimate Union, I expect them to come hard at us, with more of a running game instead of opting to kick the ball," he added.

The matriculant's future plan is to study for a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree at the University of the Free State. Given that this might be the 18-year-old's last match, he gave his team a special message ahead of the crucial encounter.

"You know what is expected of you and you know what to do. Just keep your head and don't get sucked into the hype. Just go out there, enjoy yourselves and know that I believe in you," he stated.
