Captain’s profile: Junior Burger
Duineveld No.8 Junior Burger plans to lead from the front when his team face Upington in Saturday’s FNB Classic Clash in Upington.
17-year-old Burger is a proficient ball-carrying back row forward and relishes contact situations. It comes as little surprise then that he plans to lead by example.
“It’s a great honour and privilege to captain my school and I aim to do so on and off the field while upholding our school ethos – respect, honesty, discipline and work ethic.”
In addition to his ball-carrying ability, Burger is a quality line-out jumper with the speed and ball skills that saw him feature for the Griquas Under-18 Sevens side as well as the Griquas Under-18 Country District team in last year’s Academy Week.
His all-round skill set has made him a mainstay in the first XV since making his debut two years ago and he’s determined to continue his rugby career while studying agricultural science at University next year.
Burger, who spearheads an experienced and well conditioned Duineveld side, said their defence will have to be on point on Saturday.
“Uppies have always been a good attacking team. They like to spread the ball and have pace out wide,” he said, adding, “We’ll focus on sticking to our gameplan. Interschools matches are always tough and this weekend’s game will be no exception.
“We can’t wait – it’s going to be a big one.”
