Captain's profile: Khanyisa Tshuni

Every year the small town of Graaff-Reinet comes to a complete standstill as 30 young men battle it out on the rugby field. The long standing rivalry dates back as far as 1922 – a 0-0 draw – and this year will be no different, when the two teams lock horns with the same intent and eagerness to prove themselves against their bitter rivals.

Throughout the years, the results of the Classic Clash can never be predicted with certainty.

Boasting three years' experience in the first XV and representing Eastern Province Country District Craven Week side in 2015, Tshuni is all too familiar with the pressure and what is at stake.

"We expect a very tough game and I never consider any match to be easy, especially not a Classic Clash. It means a lot to them [Volkskool], as it does to us. The last time we won was in 2012, and since then we have had two draws and lost last year by a single point.

"So far, we have had a very good season and we plan to make a success of this coming weekend at our local Interschools. Fortunately we are at full strength and this means that we have quality and experienced players – on the bench too. We have 13 players who were involved in last year's clash and I think that gives us a slight advantage," Tshuni said.

The captain will play a vital part on Saturday, as he is pivotal in creating space for his backline while his captaincy will add another dimension to his side.

"I am honoured to captain such a talented team and I aim to lead them by example in all that I do, whether it is on or off the field.

"My time in the EPCD Craven Week [2015] side has really inspired me; it was truly a highlight to represent Union High School at that level. Just like it's an honour to represent the school in the Classic Clash.

"I want to remind the guys that we have worked really hard this season at controlling the controllables and capitalising on all opportunities we create. This week is no different. So it is just a matter of executing what we do and working harder than the opponent," he added.

The matriculant's focus if now on his final school year, but he intends to further his studies and continue with his rugby career.
