Captain's profile: Nathan Fredericks
The rivalry between the Paarl neighbours has become a much-awaited occasion. The rivalry dates back as far as 1994, where New Orleans secured the first ever win, 33-3. The result of an encounter between the schools can never be predicted with certainty, clearly shown in 2015 – where both teams were forced to share the spoils in a 10-all draw.
Playing in his second year of first XV rugby, Fredericks has become accustomed to the unpredictable nature of the Classic Clash.
"In 2014 we won, and last year it was a draw. When Klein Nederburg and New Orleans lock horns you can't really predict a winner or loser, thus you can never truly know what to expect. However, with each match, there is a good sense of sportsmanship and mutual respect among the teams.
"The only thing I would encourage my boys with is to stay humble and enjoy the game," Fredericks said.
Klein Nederburg's season has been great, having won 11 of the 16 games they have played thus far and includes a 47-0 win over Hoërskool Labori. The skipper will lead a well-balanced side.
"The season was good to us thus far, we only lost five of our matches, so it does give the boys some sort of confidence heading into the crucial match. We will be fielding a balanced side on Saturday, consisting of experienced and young players, with only one key player missing from the regular starting line-up due to injury," he added.
The openside flank is brilliant on defence, however, it is his communication skills on and off the field that guaranteed him the prestigious captaincy role.
"Being named captain is an exciting feeling, I am really thankful to the first XV players and coaches for believing in me enough to trust me with it. As a captain, I always strive to lead by example and keep the team calm by communicating with them," he added.
A natural born leader and protector, the young man is considering joining the Navy or Army or becoming a teacher.
