Captain’s profile: Selvyn Davids

Nico Malan captain Selvyn Davids will be his team’s key player in Saturday’s FNB Classic Clash against Framesby in Humansdorp.

The flyer’s experience, proven leadership skills, unerring boot and prolific try-scoring record has made Davids a well-known first XV player over the past two seasons.

Although he represented Eastern Province at Under-12, Under-13 and Under-16 level, Davids truly announced himself as a potential star of the future in last year’s Under-18 Currie Cup.

He was one of the stars of the competition, impressing along with Southern Kings speedster Sergeal Petersen, and was subsequently included in the South African Under-18 training squad.

Ineligible for selection due to his age, the points machine was missed by Eastern Province at this year’s Craven Week. However, he’s continued to captain Nico Malan and terrorise defenders with his pace, ability to step off both feet and accurate goal-kicking.

It’s no wonder he’s been snapped by the Kings on a three-year contract.

Before he joins the union next year, the 19-year-old will aim to end his schoolboy rugby career on a high by leading Nico Malan to victory in the big derby this weekend.

“Our season has been excellent, beating the likes of  Die Brandwag , Daniel Pienaar and Dale College and drawing with Selborne and  Diamantveld,” said Davids, who’s moved from the wing to outside centre this year.

“We're expecting a very hard match being contested up front and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
