Captain's profile: Shandrey Pietersen

The inside centre just returned from representing Boland's Under-18 Craven Week side and looks forward to the much anticipated battle.

"Playing Provincial rugby is always a thrill, but the Classic Clash is just a different – it is about pride and bragging rights.

"Fortunately, I am used to high pressure matches – having represented Boland U13 Craven week [in 2011] and the U18 Craven Week side [in 2016]. One of my highlights would definitely be my try against Western Province in 2016," Pietersen said.

In 2015, the 18-year-old was part of the side who ended a two-year losing streak with a nail-biting 23-20 Classic Clash win over Weltevrede SS and this year a win would be so much sweeter with his new role in the first XV.

"It is a massive honour being named the captain of the first XV. It's something you can't describe to anyone and I feel privilege to be part of such a group of guys who just want to win.

"We have had a very good season thus far, we even recorded an historic win against Groendal Secondary School on our home ground. I feel like we head into this match with a great deal of confidence," Pietersen added.

Despite a full strength squad and Pietersen's great form as player and captain, the inside centre warns his side to be wary of the oppositions' strengths.

"Having a full strength team available for Saturday is always a good thing and it does give us a slight edge. But I know all too well not to underestimate Weltevrede. I expect them to come hard at us to prevent them conceding back-to-back defeats.

"If we want to win we should just trust our preparations and have a positive mindset just like last year," he added.

With great attacking skills and leadership qualities, the inside centre is hopeful the Boland Rugby Union will offer him a contract after he matriculates.
