Captain's profile: Zander Wasserman
Welkom Gimnasium captain Zander Wasserman will be hoping his team can continue their 'dream' season when they face rivals Goudveld Hoërskool in their Classic Clash on Saturday.
Welkom Gim are unbeaten this year and Wasserman would like to continue that form this weekend.
"Our greatest strength is that we play with freedom within structure," said Wasserman. "They will come out guns blazing, but eventually we believe the dam wall will break.”
The 17-year-old lock captained the Griffons Under-18 Academy Week side in this year's Youth Weeks rugby season. This might be a highlight for most young rugby players, but not for Wasserman. He believes he still has bigger things to achieve on the rugby field.
"All Academy players were unlucky to not have made the Craven Week squad, but we as a group did very well and ended fifth overall. I am very grateful for the opportunity that I received.
"Every game is a highlight for me – the one outstanding one is still to be achieved," he said.
Wasserman, who has been part of his school's first team for two years now, says the talent and experience in the Welkom Gim squad makes his job as captain much easier.
"It is an honour and privilege to be captain. This year's team is so talented that they are all captains within their own rights. All that is left to do is to bring calmness and communicate.
"A captain's power is not in his strengths but how he uses his strengths. As a team the doing is here and now. Truth is in the there and then," he added.
Although rugby is his passion, Wasserman said there will be other opportunities in life if he does not make it as a player in the not too distant future.
"I will give myself a year in the game [after school] if it can become a career. If not, there are some other wonderful careers to follow," said Wasserman.
