CC: Gimmies beat Volkies in Potch

In an FNB Classic Clash in Potchefstroom on Saturday, Potchefstroom Gimnasium beat Potchefstroom Volkskool 24-16.

This has reversed the recent trend. Gimmies had not won in the previous six years and had suffered heavy defeats in 2010 and 2011 – 30-3 and 38-17.

The match was played at Volkskool and they scored first from a penalty but then Gimmies scored the first of their four tries when Franco du Preez went over in the corner.

But Volkies came back with a second penalty and then a try of their own, scored by DJ White. That meant that Volkies led 11-5 at the break. Replacement Herman Jordaan scored a try for Gimmies and then Armand du Preez got a second for Volkies who then led 16-10.

For Gimmies a big change came when Lemmer Vermooten moved into flyhalf and their pack began to get on top. The forwards drove over in a bundle to make the score 16-15 and then with five minutes to play replacement Barend Steyn scored at the posts.

This was the 23rd match between the two schools since 1990. Volkies have won 11, Gimmies 10 and there have been two draws. It is a good rivalry.
