Championship for Aussie Schools
The Australian Schoolboy Championships starts this week at St Ignatius Riverview in Sydney.
It lasts for six days.
Unlike South Africa's Craven Week it is a championship. It also is a form of trials for the selection of the Australian Schoolboys team to play New Zealand in October.
The Australian Rugby Union general manager development pathways Ben Whitaker was pleased to see the tournament kick off for 2014. He said: “The Australian Schoolboys program has been an important cog in the Australian Rugby Elite pathway wheel for many years.
“It’s always an exciting prospect looking for the Australian rugby stars of tomorrow in events like this. This tournament will provide an excellent opportunity for sides to be exposed to challenging, exciting rugby."
Australian Schoolboys executive officer Andrew Elliot said the 2014 Championships would provide a great opportunity for students to enhance their rugby development in a competitive tournament structure on and off the field.
“The Australian Schoolboy rugby program is one the best schoolboy rugby programs in the world. Schools from right across Australia continue to support the development of the next generation of rugby talent.”
The tournament will culminate with the finals to be played on Saturday 5 July 2014. The Australian Schoolboy side for 2014 will be announced after the conclusion of the Championship Final.
