Classic Clash in Mooi River
This is Mooi River in the Midlands of KwaZulu Natal, not the one that flows through Potchefstroom and the schools meeting in Saturday's Classic Clash are Treverton College and Weston Agricultural School.
Apart from all the good things that FNB in its generosity provides the two schools will be playing for the Dowker Trophy, donated by a father and a son, the father a Weston Old Boy, the son a Treverton Old Boy. Son Russell Dowker will be at the match to present the trophy to the winning side.
The two schools are so different. Weston was founded in 1914 – 100 next year – Treverton in 1964. Weston is a state school, Treverton private. Weston is boys only, Treverton coed since 1978. Weston is a secondary school, whereas Treverton starts right down at the bottom and goes as far as post-matric, giving a pupil a possible 16 years at the school. Both schools have boarding. Animals at Weston are practical – dairy cows and other cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs; at Treverton there are zebra and buck in the nature reserve and riding horses aimed at training for showjumping.
Both schools encourage outdoor activities, including sport. Weston have a longer history in rugby football but Treverton have won the last two matches between the two.
