Classic Clash: Landboudal move on Augsburg

You have to admire the agricultural schools of South Africa, small in number but big on the rugby field.

Unlike Boland Landbou, Oakdale and Marlow, these two are coed schools, more boys than girls but still with only about 340 pupils in each. And yet they compete with enthusiasm. Augsburg Landbougimnasium is actually an amalgamation in 1996 of two schools – Hoërskool Clanwilliam and Hoër Landbouskool Augsburg.

Landboudal is really a nickname, combining  Landbouskool and Jacobsdal, a small, attractive town near Kimberley but in the Free State.

Up the West Coast from Cape Town, attractive Clanwilliam is in the valley of the Olifants River. Clanwilliam with its population of roughly 7 000 has about 500 more inhabitants than Jacobsdal.

The annual competition between the two is recent. It started only in 2015 when Landboudal won. The next two years Augsburg won.
