Classic Clash on the Banks of the Orange
Upington is not a big town – population about 75 000 – but everybody will know that this match is on this weekend – an FNB Classic Clash when Hoërskool Upington play Hoërskool Duineveld.
There will be ceremonies and happy noise and the 1st team result will stand for all the rest.
The first Interjol – the match between Duineveld and Upington – was played in 1968. Up to this 2017 match it had been played 40 times with Uppies winning 30 times.
Upington's rugby is enterprising – on the field and in their fixtures list. This year they played four matches down in the Western Province, two in the Boland and one against Noord-Kaap of Kimberley. Of their seven matches they won three, drew one and lost three – to DF Malan of Bellville, Hermanus and Noord-Kaap. They took four teams down to the Wynberg Festival in April.
Of the Upington team, Devan Walters and flyhalf Iwan Lombard played for Griquas Country Districts at the 2016 Craven Week and prop Jeandré Simon at the Academy Week.
