College beat House

Match report

Maritzburg College beat Michaelhouse of Balgowan 27-20 on Goldstone's at College on Saturday.

College should have won this match far more comfortably. Their forwards were magnificent, winning a stream of possession and driving forward inexorably, but College could not build on this huge advantage.

They camped in Michaelhouse territory in both halves of the game, exerting an almost complete stranglehold. But both sides scored three tries.

Michaelhouse had no ball and, other than from kick-offs, penetrated into College’s half only four times, but came away with three tries and a penalty.

Crucial tackles were missed by College on each occasion, although generally their defence was excellent.

College’s territorial advantage, however, brought them four successful penalty kicks to one, and this, in the end, brought victory.

College led 11-3 at half-time and 27-13 shortly before the final whistle, but Michaelhouse had the final say, closing the gap to 27-20 with a late try.
