They are old schools with great traditions. St Andrew's was founded by the Anglican church in 1855. Selborne College was founded under a different name in 1872. St Andrew's claims to have been the first school in South Africa to -play rugby. That was in 1878 when other entities were playing local games as was the case in most parts of the world where 'football' was played. Selborne also started playing late in the 19th century

Travel between Grahamstown and East London was slow and uncomfortable and as a result Selborne and St Andrew's first met in 1931 but they have been enthusiastic about meeting since then. Selborne with some 750 boys is bigger than St Andrew's with roughly 450 but the Grahamstown sides have always stood up really well.

Season So Far

Both have played 11 matches. Selborne have lost three of them, St Andrew's two, but there is a great difference in the calibre of opposition.

Selborne has played six sides which feature on the FNB Top 20, St Andrew's none. Selborne have actually beaten a Top 20 team, HTS Middelburg (when they were in the Top 20) and drawn with Monument. Their defeats have been at the hands of Dale, Queen's and the great Grey College. St Andrew's have lost to DHS and Bishops.

Selborne are ranked 15th, St Andrew's not at all.

Results Down the Years

As we have for many other traditional matches, we should like to develop a complete record of 1st XV matches between St Andrew's and Selborne going back 85 years.

Very tentatively we give this small group of possible results. We should be most grateful if they could be added to and corrected.
