College run Kearsney close

At Kearsney College, Botha's Hill, Kearsney beat Maritzburg College 22-15 in a rescheduled fixture which had been postponed because of a flu epidemic some weeks previously.

The visitors showed their plan from the start with powerful forward play.  They capitalised in the fifth minute on a penalty from a Kearsney breakdown infringement. Kearsney soon replied with a try resulting from a number of pick and drive movements and when the ball was moved to the backs flyhalf Tristan Tedder dived over. He converted for a 7-3 lead.

College scored their second penalty five minutes later and pressurised the Kearsney defence with multiple pick-and-go driving plays which led to their only and unconverted try of the match.

Kearsney was awarded a scrum on the right-hand side of the field just inside the opponents’ half. Matt Reece-Edwards fed Tedder, who masterfully accelerated through a gap showing great pace to outsprint all the defenders and score his second try next to the left-hand upright.  Again Tedder converted for a 14-11 lead – which was the halftime score as well.

College continued with their forward play strategy and were soon awarded a penalty to draw the score level at 14-all.

Kearsney played a tactically better second half and Tedder slotted a drop goal from close range to regain the lead of 17-14. The hosts created more opportunities and only resolute defence kept the attackers from converting.

Eventually fullback Chris Lines broke the line from a lineout and chipped the ball over the fullback for an exciting chase which Kearsney gathered and lock Mitch du Toit scored by diving over for Tedder to convert.

The match will best be remembered for the physicality of the forward packs with eighthman Ayron Schramm, hooker Jordan Meaker and flyhalf Tristan Tedder shining for the hosts in their last outing for the school.
