Cornel du Plessis Wagpos Captain
Player Profile
Wagpos of Brits host neighbours and rivals Brits High School in a FNB Classic Clash on Saturday. Eighthman Cornel du Plessis captains Wagpos.
Cornel du Plessis ws born in Brits on 4 May 1988, where he attended Laerskool Sanddrift. He is currently in Grade 12 and is a school and hostel prefect. Cornel says he is really enjoying leading his school and his team as the experience is one you can take with you in life.
Cornel has slowly worked his way to the back of the scrum having started out in junior school as a prop before moving to lock in Grade 9 and then loose-forward in Grade 10 (Standard 8). Cornel is a very mobile No.8 who carries the ball and defends well. His favourite player is the rather unfashionable Xavier Rush, formerly of Auckland and occasionally of the All Blacks. The choice of hero is very apt though as their attributes are very similar and Rush was always recognised as an exceptional leader. Cornel has not been selected for the Leopard Craven Week team this year.
When asked about his team this season, Cornel described them as “kookwater”, which I suppose can only be translated as on top form. As one would expect Wagpos have a strong physical pack, who they will be looking to dominate on Saturday. Wagpos have played only four games thus far this season and have won two and lost two. There most notable win to date being a 10-8 defeat of Potchefstroom Gimnasium.
Cornel hopes to study for a law degree at Northwest University in Potchefstroom next year while furthering his rugby at their impressive academy. He is looking forward to Saturday’s game and the traditions that go with it. Brits won last year’s game relatively convincingly but Cornel knows that the beauty of derbies is that anything can happen on the day.
