Dale Win - and Draw Level

Dale won the 181st match between Queen’s College in Queenstown and drew level with their Border rivals. It was a match that carried a stamp of approval – a Classic Clash.

Of the 181 matches, Queen’s and Dale have each won 82, and 17 have been drawn.

It was a big day for Queen’s – Reunion Day, but on the Recreation Field on Saturday afternoon it was a big day for Dale who won the 1st XV match handsomely – 32-6.

The difference between the two teams was not, perhaps, as great as the score suggests. Queen’s were not lacking endeavour and determination but their handling did not match that of the Dale side who caught and passed so much better than the home side did.

Queen’s scored all their points in the first seven minutes – through penalty goals off the left boot of flyhalf Sihlalo Benge. They led 6-0 and did not score again in the next 63 minutes of the match.

Dale on the other hand scored four tries despite being down to 14 players after right wing Emile Matsinya had received a second yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. Two yellow cards = a red card.

Dale had had only 14 players when they scored their first try. They were getting on top, and a penalty gave them an attacking lineout. They mauled and lock Lwando Kolisa plunged over and scored. That made it 6-5 after 20 minutes.

Outside centre Iniphile Tyeda broke well but a knock-on prevented a try. Dale had to be satisfied with a penalty goal by Tyeda, which gave them an 8-6 lead after 25 minutes.

Dale were close again when inside centre Simelela Mbanzi broke and fullback Thando Zoki was brilliantly stopped by scrumhalf Aviwe Kanuka at the goal-line.

After winning a turnover on their line, Queen’s kicked downfield, and Matsinya started a counterattack on the Queen’s 10-metre line and lock Kolisa sold a dummy and strode through for his second try. Tyeda converted. 15-6 after 32 minutes.

Queen’s handling cost them dearly when a knock-on landed in the arms of Matsinya who broke free and raced 55 metres to score a try which left wing Thato Mosiane converted. 22-6 after 40 minutes.

Queen’s had a great opportunity to score a try as they bashed at the Dale line with hooker Liyema Mgwigwi close, but they were penalised.

Dale, too came close, as big Nande Lucas charged at the line, but they had to be satisfied with a Moisane penalty. 25-6 with 15 minutes to play.

After Dale had been reduced to 14 men, Queen’s had a long attack but a counterruck gave Dale the ball inside their own 22. They went blind and there was Moisane speeding away down the left. Challenged, he passed inside to athletic lock Siphelele Njumba who beat a defender with a swerve and strode round for a try at the posts. The conversion ended the match.
