Dalians' rugby achievements
Dale College in King William's Town is celebrating its 150th birthday this year and the celebrations are centred on the Reunion Day this Saturday.
It is a big occasion and Queen's College will come down from the mountains to celebrate with Dale, as they have been doing since 1891.
Hennie Otto has sent us a great document of Dale's rugby achievements since 1963. Of course there have been many more before then, including Springboks Sonny Taberer in 1906, Cocky Brooks, Brem Neill, CB Jennings, Peewee Howe and HO de Villiers. The field on which Dale will play against Queen's is named for CB Jennings who played for Border while he was still at school. That was in 1934 when Border shared the Currie Cup with Western Province. CB's son Mike played for South Africa and his other son Trevor for =Eastern Province.
In the list Hennie sent us there are the many Dalians who achieved greatness at cricket, waterpolo and hockey. Cricketers include the late Hilton Ackerman and the great Makhaya Ntini.
At the first opportunity the late Steve Tshwete, who became the minister of sport, known as Mr Fixit, enrolled his son at Dale. He said: "When I grew up I so admired those boys in their blazers and bashers."
