DHS 1st XV had a tough fixture against St Charles on Saturday the 13 May, which they won 23-6.
After an early onslaught by St Charles the 1st XV weathered the storm, and Ryan Matthysen was successful with a penalty to take the lead 3-0. St Charles soon equalized with a long range penalty.
The first half was tight and hard fought affair, and only towards the end of the first half, did DHS manage to score a try through Msissi Buthelezi, who picked up the ball at the base of a ruck after a continuous attack by the DHS boys. He sprinted down the touch-line to beat the cover defence and dived over for his first try. Ryan Matthysen was successful with the conversion, to take the score to 10 – 3.
St Charles kicked another penalty towards the end of the first half to take the score to 10-6.
DHS regrouped after half time and took the game to St Charles. After continuous attack, St Charles gave a way a penalty that Ryan Matthysen converted to take the score to 13-6. It was important for DHS and maintain the momentum and to score next to take it to a two score difference. Again St Charles gave away a penalty, that Ryan Matthysen converted to take the score to a very important 16-6.
St Charles did not give up and fought back hard. The came close to scoring on couple of occasions in the second half, but a resolute DHS defence kept them out. Towards the end of the second half Msizi Buthelezi rounded off a great backline move to score under the posts that was converted my Ryan Matthysen to give DHS a deserved 23-6 victory.
In many ways it was a disappointing display by the 1st XV, but it must be remembered that you are only play as well as your opponents allow you to play.
