FNB Classic Clash: Country Derby
On Saturday, 20 July, Aliwal North will leave the Orange River and travel 160 km into the mountains to meet old rivals Hoërskool Hangklip in an unpredictable FNB Classic Clash.
There will be a big crowd and lots of enthusiasm on the occasion.
Hangklip won at the death in Aliwal North in 2010 but in 2011 Aliwal-Noord hammered them in Queenstown. Last year Hangklip were favourites but they lost 21-10.
Because Aliwal North play more into the Free State and Hangklip into Border, they do not have many opponents in common. This year they have both played Cradock High School and both won comfortably, Aliwal North 23-11 and Hangklip 36-8. Hangklip have taken heavy defeats at the hands of Hudson Park, Gill College and Volkskool (Graaff-Reinet) while Aliwal North, who have beaten Bloemfontein High School, Knysna and Despatch, suffered against Durbanville when they went down to the Cape.
Player experience
Aliwal North had a player art Craven Week – right wing Aphiwe Dinga who played for Eastern Province Country Districts. Then captain Vuyo Jam has had two years at the Academy Week.
Hangklip have back from last year's starting XV Kululekani Duna, Tiaan Smuts, who has moved from inside centre to fullback, Chessray Solomons, who has moved from wing to outside centre and flyhalf Riaan Pretorius, Andrich Friebe was an outside centre last year but is now a flank.
Aliwal-Noord have four back – their captain Vuyo Jam, hooker, Aphiwe Dinga, who has moved to centre, hooker Zenande Mpalisa and prop Shannon Jantjies.
Hangklip are more experienced, it seems, in terms of players back from last year but they have not had a great year, winning just two matches in seven. Aliwal North play more rugby and are more adventurous, going down to Oakdale each year.
