Gimmies cruise past Volkies

Potchefstroom Gimnasium put in a powerful display to beat rivals Hoer Volkskool Potchefstroom 33-3in their Classic Clash on Saturday.

Supporters for both teams showed up in great numbers on matchday. The Volkie crowd, who were the home crowd, stood proud and tall under the guidance of a matric pupil and their well-known mascot, Twiet.

The first half was a tough one for the home side as they could only manage three points through kicking boot of flyhalf Renier Barnard after Gimmies already raced to a 12 point lead.

It was all Gimmies in the second half and they scored another 21 points with Volkies not being able to add any points to their total.

Volkies head coach Johan Herbst said his team will have to improve if they are to bounce back when they meet Gimmies again later this year.

"Even though we are disappointed by the score and outcome on the day we realise our weaknesses and will work on specific areas to improve when we meet our arch rivals for the second round later on in the league.

"We also hope to have back in our side four injured players by that time, and I believe that it might make a big difference.

"Our supporters made us proud, by not only showing up in huge numbers, but also in continuously cheering us on and in singing the school song and war cry with passion after the final whistle had blown. FNB’s continuous support and sponsorship is highly appreciated," said Herbst.
