Gimmies rule Welkom
A hat-trick by openside flank Byron Ferreira helped Welkom Gimnasium thrash rivals Goudveld Hoërskool 66-6 in their Classic Clash on Saturday.
Gimmies were always the stronger of the two sides on a day when the town of Welkom focussed all its attention on their top schoolboy rugby players.
With 11 of Griffons' Craven Week players in their team, Gimmies ran riot on an afternoon which saw them score ten tries to the zero of Goudveld in front of 9 000 spectators.
Ferreira's teammate, flyhalf Luan James, scored a brace on a day when he racked up a personal tally of 20 points on the day.
It was an all-round performance by Gimmies as they also prevented Gouties from crossing the whitewash with flyhalf Ruben Abrahams only converting two penalties for his team.
Inside centre Danie Hendricks and fullback Ezrick Alexander both got a try each with forwards Jerome Lottering and SJ Malherbe also representing the pack on the score sheet as well. Tristan Rothman got a try as well in a dominant display.
Welkom Gimmies would have felt that they restored order in the town after their 18-36 loss last year and they also added another win to their impressive record against Gouties.
The win means Gimmies have won seven of the last ten encounters between the two sides.
