Glenwood and College Meet Again

As they have done for 98 years, Glenwood and Maritzburg College meet on the rugby field with enthusiasm undimmed by time.

The matches this week are down in Durban, in Glenwood High’s home – at a time when Glenwood are certainly favourites to win the 1st XV match.

For years and years, the red, white and black jerseys of Maritzburg College dominated rugby in Natal. Glenwood has rather taken over that mantle in KwaZulu-Natal. The last time College won was in 2010, the time before that in 2006, and they usually play twice a year..

In all they have played 170 times since 1921. College have won 109, Glenwood 44, and 17 have been drawn.

Performances to Far in 2019

The season is in its infancy but so far Glenwood have fared far, far better. They have beaten KES, Hilton and Westville and won both of their matches at the World Rugby Festival in Stellenbosch, one 32-17 against John McGlashan College of Dunedin, New Zealand, and one against a combined team.

Meanwhile College have lost to Noord-Kaap of Kimberley and Northwood. It was the very first time that Northwood have beaten College and that up on College’s Goldstones. Both schools have played Sarel Cilliers of Northern KZN. Both won handsomely, College 52-24, Glenwood 40-0.
