Glenwood down DHS in FNB Classic
Match Report
Glenwood High School celebrated their Old Boys Day in the best possible way last Saturday by shutting out DHS 34-9 in an FNB Classic clash on their Dixon Field.
It was also sweet revenge for the 28-21 defeat they suffered to their arch rivals earlier this season in the away match.
Urged on by the big home crowd, the omnipresent war cries and their very own brass band, a rampant Glenwood scored four tries without reply, two in each half, with Ian Adendorff, playing at centre, scoring 19 points on his own, 14 from the boot.
DHS can have seldom been so unmotivated, being confined to their own half for most of the first half and still unable to get much further than the Glenwood 22-metre line in the second.
All their points were scored by fullback Ryan Matthysen who slotted three of his four penalty attempts.
Neither team came into this match with any great claims, DHS having won only seven of the 12 games they had played and Glenwood four of their seven.
It was a special occasion for Glenwood prop, Tsika Khuzwayo, who was making his 50th appearance for the school First XV.
Glenwood coach Toppie Hortop's forecast that his team's strength would lie in the loose forwards, including captain Warren Whitely, and the half-back pairing of scrumhalf Ryno Rust and flyhalf Hennie Swart proved an accurate one.
DHS had three points on the board in the first minute from Matthysen's left boot at a penalty but it took Glenwood only another 10 minutes to go into a 6-3 lead through Adendorff and they never looked back.
The battle for midfield supremacy raged on, first one side gaining possession of the ball and then the other through a series of turnovers, until Glenwood No 8, Bryan Shabangu, broke the deadlock, scooping up a loose ball and shrugging off a couple of tackles before sprinting 20 metres to score the opening try. Adendorff converted (13-3) and Matthysen replied with a long range penalty (13-6).
Whitely charged down a kick by Luke Fouché in the DHS half for Glenwood to gain possession and Adendorff was in the line to receive a pass from Swart, jumping into a gap to score left of the posts, Adendorff again converting (20-6).
Two penalty awards just before the half-time whistle, one missed and the other between the posts, by Matthysen saw Glenwood turn around 20-9 ahead.
Glenwood went straight into attack on the resumption which saw them gain possession at a line-out close to the DHS line, Swart off-loading the ball to fullback Ivan Kennedy who eluded the tackle to score (27-9).
Glenwood subsequently played a man short twice for yellow card offences but DHS still failed to get on top in their best period of the match.
With six minutes remaining Swart scored the best try of the match to put the last nail in the DHS coffin when he ran all of 80 metres from his own 22, selling a wonderful "dummy" around the halfway line, and somehow scything round the DHS fullback before dotting the ball down for an easy conversion by Adendorff.
Glenwood can continue their celebrations with an away win over George Campbell this Saturday while DHS will have to be back to their best form if they are to defeat Michaelhouse on their Founders Day on the Van Heerden Field.
