Glenwood for Sanix 2016
Glenwood High School of Durban have been invited to take part in the annual Sanix Rugby World Youth Invitational Tournament in Fukuoka Japan, in Aril-May 2016. It will be the third time that Glenwood have been invited by SARU to attend.
There are 16 school teams taking part each year – eight from Japan itself and eight from abroad. In 2015 Paarl Boys' High won a tournament whose most frequent winners have been the New Zealand schools champions.
In 2008, Glenwood won the tournament and in 2009 came third.
The invitation goes from Japan to SARU. South Africa does not have schools champions and so SARU pick a school that is worthy of representing South Africa and willing to go.
Glenwood are certainly willing to go.
The school has to finance its own way to Japan but once there is looked after by Japan's rugby authorities and the sponsors, Sanix.
In order to raise funds for the tour Glenwood is organising a dinner with a glittering array of speakers. Part of the money raised will go to Joost van der Westhuizen's J9 Foundation.
The dinner will take place at Glenwood High School on Friday, 4 September 2015
Ian McIntosh, the charismatic coach and selector with an energetic sense of humour, will be the master of ceremonies. The guest speakers will all be Springboks – Gary Teichmann who held the record for captaining the Springboks till John Smit overtook him, John Allan who is a Glenwood Old Boy and who also played for Scotland, André Joubert, the Rolls Royce of fullbacks, and Joost van der Westhuizen, greatest of scrumhalves and a former Springbok captain, now a victim of motor neuron disease. His charity and his person have brought help to many fellow-sufferers of the harsh disease.
It should be a grand occasion.
