Glenwood go down to Monnas
In a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match in Durban on Saturday the 1st June, the Green Machine took on the ever imposing Monument side of Krugersdorp.
It was always going to be a tough encounter as both teams have a number of players competing in the Craven Week Tournament later this year.
From the kick off Glenwood seemed to dominate the game and some quick work from the centres and quick-footed Curtis Jonas saw Glenwood’s fullback Corné Vermaak go over for the first try of the match which he then converted. 7-0
Glenwood continued to dominate and received a further three points after an infringement by the Monument forwards. 10-0
It was at this point that the visiting team seemed to gain some composure and began not only to dominate possession but also continually attack Glenwood’s try line. Quick ball distribution from the Monument scrumhalf and captain Johan Esterhuizen empowered the massive No.8 Wiehan Jacobs to crash over the line as flank Wandi Mazibuko tackled him. Centre Gerdus van der Walt converted. 10-7 after 18 minutes in the home sides favour. Again Monument seemed to keep possession and a few driving mauls resulted in Monuments second try of the match scored by centre Stefan le Roux. This took the half time score to 14-10 in Monuments favour after 25 minutes, which was the half-time score.
The second half saw Glenwood attack early and a penalty in the 40th minute resulted in three points from the boot of Vermaak. From then onwards Monument took the majority of possession and spent a lot of time in the Glenwood half. Multiple handling errors from Monument kept them from scoring – handling errors and gritty Glenwood tackling, but Glenwood suffered two setbacks. First Vermaak, the best back on the field who has suffered from injuries of late, was taken off on a stretcher holding his side and then Ntokozo Vidima received a yellow card.
As they had done all match Glenwood ran, this time from deep defence. Monument got possession and bashed at the line till they were held up. This produced a five-metre scrum and then a penalty in Monnas' favour .A set move produced a maul and Jacobs was over for his second try.
Glenwood carried on running. Unfortunately a pass from Glenwood’s flyhalf Curtis Jonas was intercepted by Monument’s wing Fransisco du Toit who ran 50 metres to score in the 68th minute. 26-13.
Glenwood scored a late consolation try when wing Morné Joubert charged down Johan Esterhuizen's kick near the Glenwood 10-metre line. Joubert gathered the bouncing ball inside the Monnas half and raced off to score under the posts. 26-20, the final score.
