Glenwood turn tables on College

Match Report

Beaten in Pietermaritzburg Glenwood turned the tables on College by beating them 19-14 in Durban.

Although College had won the first Glenwood match by a comfortable 24-0 margin, Glenwood were clearly better than that and a close match was expected.

Glenwood started positively, with a fairly strong wind behind them, and scored quickly when College failed to deal with a high kick.

Then a fumbled transfer between the College eighthman and the scrumhalf at a scrum allowed Glenwood to intercept and score. Both tries were converted for a 14-0 lead.

Shortly before half-time, when College seemed to have weathered the storm without suffering further damage, concerted pressure brought Glenwood a third try which their enterprising running  deserved.

Although College had done little other than defend in the first half, they had the prospect of the wind in their favour in the second half. But for twenty minutes College could not reduce the deficit. They repeatedly opted to kick penalties into the corners, but their line-out was far from secure and the backs showed little penetration, despite plentiful ball.

Then, in the last ten minutes, the Glenwood defensive wall showed a few cracks and two converted tries brought College within range.

With two minutes left, College at last had a glimmer of hope, but it was Glenwood who finished the stronger and ran out deserved 19-14 victors.
