The first round of matches kicked off in glorious sunshine on Thursday morning
Players at Primary Schools often approach the game in a more simple and unsophisticated manner, thus bringing with them a flair and determination which is sometimes lost when they get to high school. The larger fields of the high school also afforded the young players the opportunity to play the friendly game with fast-running backs and enjoy the opportunity to outsprint their opponents. Some very interesting results were recorded.
The boys played open and competitive rugby. Some of the better players started coming to the fore as they were being afforded opportunities to express their talents and skills. Self-consciousness in Primary School rugby is very often cast aside and, other than for the anxious and competitive coaches, the boys can experience the wonderful camaraderie and physical nature of an friendly game of rugby.
Rugby at the development level is also very encouraging and the coaching staff at the Rugby Union must be congratulated on their efforts in producing some fine young talent. Two rounds of fixtures were played at the school on Thursday, with another two rounds on Friday and a round on Saturday.
Judged by the talent, skills, expertise and sheer determination expressed by the young players at the Festival, the future of South African Rugby is strong. The boys are all prepared to play running, attractive rugby and this promises well for the long term future of South African Rugby. Each school played five games which tested the fitness of some of these very young boys, but they gave of their best and the Festival was indeed a great success.
