Graeme College vs St Andrew's College, 11 May 2019

Graeme College, St Andrew’s Prep and St Andrew’s College enjoyed another great derby weekend. St Andrew’s started off winning three hockey matches earlier in the week and the rugby followed on Saturday. It is one of the oldest fixtures in the country with the two schools showing great respect and comradery.

The Graeme junior school ended with a clean sweep winning all six matches on the day, and would have been delighted with their results. The matches culminated in a 21-5 win in the Under-13A game.

Graeme found the going a lot tougher in the senior school, where St Andrew’s won eight of the ten matches played. The Graeme Under-16A side came agonisingly close and lost 13-12 in a great contest. Without doubt, Graeme would have been thrilled with the performance from the Under-15A side, who seemed to completely out of the contest as St Andrew’s led 33-7 in the second half. Graeme turned the match on its head and entertained the home crowd with some exhilarating rugby. Graeme somehow managed to find a way to win 42-33 in the end.

The Graeme College 1st XV were always up against it in the FNB Classic Clash. The St Andrew’s 1st XV proved too strong for Graeme on the day. Graeme were disappointed with the first 20 minutes of the match as they conceded three soft tries to trail 21-0. It seemed the pressure had been too much to handle in those early encounters and it was always going to be a tough ask to come back from that. Thereafter the Graeme team played some exciting rugby for the remainder of the first half and scored two tries of their own to fight back and trail 21-12 at the break.

In the second half St Andrew’s’ piled on relentless pressure leading to another four tries. The visitors had more ball and forced the hosts to defend for large parts of the game. Both teams played an exciting brand of rugby that kept the spectators on their feet. Congratulations must go to St Andrew’s College who put together another good performance and continue to be a difficult team to beat this year. St Andrew’s won 47-19.
