Graeme spring surprise

Match Report

Graeme captain and flyhalf Lorenzo Southey dominated against Muir on Saturday to give Graeme a surprise but convincing 29-13 victory.

Muir came into the game as clear favourites having recently been included in the FNB top 20, but Graeme completely dominated the game.

Southey scored 19 points and was involved in all of Graeme’s points-scoring.

Muir went into an early 8-3 lead after a try from Phiwe Lalendle, but Graeme replied straight away with a try from Bradley Birkholtz.  Southey put up an up-and-under, brilliantly re-gathered in the air and offloaded to the wing to score in the corner. This made the half-time score 10-8 to Graeme.

From there on Southey and Graeme took control.  Graeme’s second try was scored by Southey, who took a brilliant angle from a ruck on the halfway and beat two defenders to score; and then converted.  Southey then hit another gap from a scrum, passed exceptionally to Matthew Labuschagne who then put Birkholtz in the corner.  Graeme now led 22-8.

Muir scored from a chip over from Siviwe Konki, but a Graeme victory never looked in doubt.  Southey capped off his and Graeme’s best performance of the season with another individualistic try and he scored under the poles.

The final whistle was greeted with a proud Graeme war cry on the field – with the whole school calling on coach Nico van der Meulen who had his last game in charge of the first XV after coaching for 16 years.
